MALONE, NEW YORK Jan. 5, 2025

The Free Lance News.org has taken a bold step and applied for the 2025 Pulitzer Prize in 5 categories: Public Service, Investigative Reporting, Explanatory Reporting, Beat Reporting and Breaking News. All our submissions relate to the killing of inmate Robert Brooks by New York State prison guards on Dec. 9, 2024.

Some stories are submitted more than once, which is allowed by the Pulitzer rules. The number of submissions per category is set by the rules at 15 for public service and 7 for the remainder. We only submitted one report for consideration in the breaking news category, and submitted the maximum number allowed in the remainder.

Read The Free Lance News's offerings in their order of submission below, which is how the Pulitzer committee says it reads the contenders.
